In one of the event's of my high school life, my English teacher assigned the class to read a book before the end of second term. She made us go to the school library and take our pick. Me, being the picky reader I am, can't read a book if it doesn't interest me within the first couple pages. So, as I was browsing, I saw that our library had multiple Nicholas Sparks books to choose from. I remembered the name from watching "The Notebook". (Yeah, I know.) Loving that movie, I decided to make this book my selection. If you're new to the name of Nicholas Sparks or you've never even heard of the movie title "The Notebook", he is an amazing author that leans into that genre of love and romance novels. If that's your cup of joe, listen up.
In the first couple pages of reading this, I wasn't immediately pulled in. Like I said before, I'm usually the kid that can't keep reading for the life of me. That being the case, I kept reading just so I could get the book done and over with. But as I kept reading, I started to get more attached to the characters and found myself not wanting to put the book down.
It's about a man named John Tyree, a man in the army that's on leave to visit his father. During the short period of time that he's on this leave, he meets this girl by the name of Savannah who is in town working for Habitat for Humanity for the summer. The "damsel in distress" situation happens, getting them to kick off conversation very easily. During the remaining weeks of John's leave, him and Savannah end up falling for each other. When he has to return to duty, she promises to write to him all the time to keep him filled in on how life is going and to find out about his life across seas. I'll leave the rest for the reader to experience.
All in all, I thought the book was amazing. It shows a great deal of morals and in the end, will make you feel for the characters in a way that in my opinion, is unexplainable. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes things of this genre.
Oh, and I later found out that this was made into a movie starring Channing Tatum (the new G.I. Joe movie) and Amanda Seyfried (Jennifer's Body, and I'm pretty sure she was in Mean Girls.) It is going to be released in theaters February 5th. From the trailers, it looks almost exactly like the book. Here's a look.
